Personally I found the process of labelling and importing shots relatively easily and I renamed them so they were more specific to my work and story board/ shot list and made it easier to locate what files I wanted at what parts.
Editing processes
I really enjoyed the editing prossess although it was a long process as I had to go through all of these stages with each individual clip ,so it took a long time.
OFFline edit
During my offline edit I felt the video with all the backstory may be too long , so I cut out the previous parts of the video and I just made the end sequence. Feedback I received: Oscar Carter- Nice effects but it glitches at one point where the character isn't in the green screen shot for like a half second when they should be and also what is the backstory ? Andrew Ranner- It looks fairly good but I would want it to be a bit longer and I am a bit confused as to what the whole situation is
The main points I gathered was that they did want the entire video I had planned and that they needed the storyline to be satisfied with the video. And also to fix the technical glitches. So I decided to re-edit the entire piece for the final product and edit back in the backstory that was already shot.
Justify Product Strengths:
The use of visual effects
The cooperation and efficiency of the crew
Editing the gosht like appearance
directing actors and then the acting I’m the final piece
Weaknesses:
Lighting
Organisation ( I had to change days of filming frequently and once double booked the green screen studio)
Editing within the time frame of the video ( it is slightly longer then I originally wished
Quality of finished piece discussion The quality of my piece is quite good in my opinion, when taking into account my skills level and experience. This is because I think that the storyline is emotional and gripping, which helps to engage the audience and takes some of the emphasis away from the visual and special effects. There are some ways I would improve the video, Such as, changing the lighting of the video and not having as many shots in some parts of the video. I also would dress the sets a bit better, so that some of the sets, such as the bedroom, were more suited and personal to the character. I feel like, although I am happy with my piece, that the video isn’t ready for consumption as some of the effects and shots used look a bit amateurish. I feel like with some more time spent in editing it could be but at the moment I don’t feel it would satisfy my target audience.
Conventions of Visual and Special effects In order to justify the use of visual and special effects in my sequence we have to look at the ski-fy and fantasy genre conventions. The relevant ones are:
High production values- I was working within a small production budget, so couldn’t hire specific crew members of have the quality of equipment as a high production value and high budget film.
Younger target audience although significant older appeal- I feel that this is a strength of mine , because in my brief I had a fairly young target audience, is late teens and early 20’s and this age can share and post on social media and it can reach more people there age and older
Saturated primary colours- I feel that this is a weakness, mainly because I didn’t use many bright or primary colours . I mainly used blue as a primary colour for my piece but that often came off as too dark.
High key lighting- I feel that this is a weakness and strength as some of the lighting was too dark in some scenes. However, the lighting in the green screen room was correct and made the footage easy to edit.
Significant CGI and FX e.g. green screen technology- This is a strength in my video as it uses multiple significant CGI and FX as there is the green screen, appearing petals, the transparent ghost effects and also the glory effects of the flashbacks.
Iconography includes magic, mystical creatures, futuristic people, aliens- I feel that this is a strength mainly because there was a ghost in the piece, however, I am aware that this may not be quite as iconic as a mermaid or something a bit more imaginative but it is still fairly good in terms of iconography.
Compare it to the original idea you had in your head - how was it different? I feel that my original idea and my final piece are extremly similar. They both follow the same storyline, of a man following a ghost and walking off a cliff. However, there are some aspects where my original idea and my final product are a little different. Originally, some of the props and special effects I had planned to use are different to how i had pictured them. However, during the editing process I found more suitable ways to create the effects that I wanted to create, so I decided that I would create the sequence this way as it is more tailored to my ability and would create a more consistent finished product. Another difference between my original idea and my final product was the fact I was thinking of showing the man actually walking of the falling down the cliff. However, during editing I found that I didn't have the skills or shots required to make this happen, also I feel that it would have been to graphic to show to an audience and would have a negative effect of the reaction and rating to the video. Audience Feedback Strengths within video
Emotional storyline
The use of effects
Acting
Weaknesses of video:
lighting is too dark across parts of the video
Timing of the video and some of the shots moving to quickly
What I have learnt from my audience feedback is that I may need tow work on the lighting in my video. They commented that it was a weakness in the video, mainly because they found d it sometimes impaired how well they could view the video and all the effects within it. I feel that if I had spent more time in my visual effects working with the exposure and level of blue tint that my audience would see the video and enjoy the video a bit better. Also a comment that I got was that some of the shots I used to carry key information moved a bit too quickly. If I was to do this again I would cut some of the longer shots shorter in order to put more focus on these as I can’t just make the video longer because I am working within a time frame of the song.
However, I did find that the audience thought my storyline was emotional and engaging because it made sense and made them think They commented on the fact that they would watch the video because it had a meaning and purpose and evoked different emotions within them whilst watching the video.
What could have been done differently in the planning, production and edit?
Pre Production (Planning)- During planning I feel that I could've done my storyboard better. I feel that I could've added in more detail and that it was very rushed and inconsistent. I feel like if i had done it all digitally it would have been better. This is because I found it difficult following my storyboard on location and it was a bit all over the place in terms of what shots I needed and when, maybe if i had created a shot list as well as a story board gathering shots would have been easier.
Production- During production I feel that I could've stayed more focused as the crew that we had although organised and efficient whilst working, tended to get distracted fairly easily since , both cast and crew all got on really well together. I also feel that if i had deleted some of the shots i definitely didn’t want on site then that would have helped a lot in post since I wouldn’t have spent time going through shots I didn’t need.
Post production (Editing)- I feel like I would have benefited by taking more time to review and reflect on my work whilst editing because then I would have noticed things such as the lighting being to dark and/or glitches , ect. which would have meant I could have fixed them before showing an audience, instead of just working through the work without reviewing and have those mistakes.
If you had to do something like this again in the future with a totally different brief - what would you do differently and why?
I feel that if I had to do this again with a different brief, I would do a few things differently. For Example:
Spent more time planning my shoot and gathering all the shot lists and storyboard required. So that my shoot isn’t disorganised and everything is done on time. Instead of all the confusion I had in production about what shots to take.
Have More people on the crew to help dress the sets and help with the design and aesthetics of the piece, such as the design of the character bedroom and her ghost make up. I feel like the would make it better because it would have added more detail and given the audience more information and would have eleviated some of the pressure off myself so I could focus more on the actual production side and the video could have been higher quality.
Simplified my visual effects or used someone to help me create a higher quality of visual effect. I think this would’ve been better because it would create a better quality piece as it would mean that all the effects are crisp and of a high consistent quality as I felt that during editing that the quality was inconsistent and If i had help I would be able to prevent this and get taught the proper way to create the effects instead of having to experiment and waist time testing out bad effects.
What format are using for this video? Why are you using that format? I am using a very simple format for my video, I chose to export it to a master file because it then means I can put the video on to DVD, social media, youtube, memory stick, email and this means the client can have it in any form they want . I am exporting it to the settings I have chosen (see exporting video to look at settings ) because they don't take up too much space and compresses the video down and is a transferable video and wont just play on one kind of laptop/computer and will play across mac, microsoft, ext.
What happens if you use a different format? Sometime using other formats makes your video less transferable and means they wont be able to go on sites such as youtube . Also some other formats don't have the same quality and your video can come out looking poor quality. How will this format allow the client to easily distribute the product? Like I have said this type of file is compatible with DVD, Social media, youtube/vimeo and other computers, which means it is easy to distribute across many different mediums.
