In detail what the actual purpose of the product is
Bitesize is the BBC's free online study support resource for primary and secondary school students in the United Kingdom. It is designed to help students in school work and exams. It adapts the information it gives depending on where the student lives. For example, it has a section of the website for Scottish exams and the Scottish education system. The older you get or different age group you enter the more subjects you can learn about depending on what is offered on your curriculum. For example, on the english website both keystage 1 and 2 cover 18 subjects, where as for key stage 3 there are 33 subjects to learn about on the website. The purpose of BBC Bitesize is to educate children to help them pass exams. It does this through a variety of mens such as tests, games, videos, images and texts to read.
The other platforms this interactive product is available on and which is your preference
BBC Bitesize is made for people to use on the website, read as a book and is also available to download on app. The website version is my personal preference for which is my favourite. As I find it the easiest to both use and navigate. As the app I found a bit too cramped layout wise and it was harder to skip sections and navigate fluidly to different places on the website.
The design components and layout and your experience of it.
The design layout of the app is that the title of the app is at the centre of the top of the pages. Th topics that you study are all listed bellow and are links to other menus to specific areas of study. for example, one of the topics maybe GCSE sport and then once clicked on leads to a menu with areas of study like tac tics, sportsmanship and drugs. The colours used in the app are orange, blue and white and the font used is easy to read, clear and in black colour. Pictures are also used. Pictures vary depending on what sections of the app you are on. For example, little cartoon icons are used for topic representation, however real photos are used in the information sections amongst a few cartoons. In my opinion the colour scheme is good because it is bold and grabs your attention. However, since theses colours are used throughout the app they can quickly become tiresome and boring
Be able to compare interactive media products Describe interactive media products You should describe a minimum of three different existing interactive media products covering a range of purposes.
There are many interactive features on this app, for example when you first open the app it has a sign in/register page. Where uses can register into the app and personalise the app to their learning and only study subjects they have in exams . My experience of this feature is that I feel that it is useful, as it saves me having to navigate through the entire curriculum to find the one subject I want it the time. This option is good for users that frequently use this app as it saves them time as they don't have to organise their study as much. However, it means you can't share the app very easily , for example if your friend wanted to quickly check up on a subject ,that you don't study, quickly before an exam you couldn't .The second interactive feature is a menu where it you can access the subjects you study, they have a list in words and next to each subject a small cartoon icon representing the subjects and if you click on to the text or icon, it is linked to take you to a contents page for that subject and there you can chose what you wish to study about that topic. My experience of this is good as I feel that this is a useful feature as it saved me time and allowed me to quickly access areas of study i wasn't as confident on. Another interactive failure is that the app has mimi tests and reviews that are interactive Where the learner can take a test and check their knowledge of the information they have learnt about. This is useful because it means children can check and see if they understand and if they need to more work on something. From my personal experience I find this feature very helpful because it enables me to see my week and strong areas of knowledge and can help to increase my confidence before exams if i get the answers right.
The benefits of this interactive product are:
Allows the user to personalise their learning experience. For example, they can select to only study the topics that they have exams in and also they can sign in to the app to select the relevant country that they live in (Scotland, Wales, England or Northern Ireland) so that they can work to their relevant exam bored.
Makes it easy for users to track their progress as each subject is broken down into small sections and tests that are recorded on the app as how much of the subject you have completed (in %) and you can work until the topic/ subject is completely done.
Allows the user to be able to access their revision on the go. This means they can do it, whenever/ wherever without having to bring books or have access to the internet. This is useful because it means that students can utilise the free time they didn't realise they had, for example they can use it on car, bus and train journeys. So that they can revise where ever they go without having to worry too much about remembering resources or having enough resources.
The limitations of the interactive product
One limitation of the product is that a user has to scroll down a lot as the app has to present a lot of information on a small app meaning their is a lot of scrolling and links to click on which can be quite annoying and tedious, especially if you are using they app to be efficient or as a spare of the moment revision session and only have a spare few minutes to revise as you would spend a majority of your time scrolling rather then revising.
Another limitation to the app is that the user can't access other information outside their subjects without changing their settings. Which means if they had accidentally forgotten about a subject that they were studying when they signed up they would have to change their settings which might be difficult if they don't have much time or if they just forget to change their settings as the app doesn't remind you.
The next limitation is the fact that the tests are multiple choice, which means a student could guess an answer and get it right without knowing the answer. This in turn means they would still have a gap in their knowledge for a subject and wouldn't be prepared for that piece of information on an actual test because the app says that they know that subject even though they guessed the answers.
The effectiveness of the interactive product I feel that the interactive product is very effective, as it allows people to take their studies on the go without them having to cavy heavy or big books and allowing them to go about their day freely. It also allows them to track their progress and see what they need to work on. I feel like when I used this app in my studies I benefited significantly as it allowed me to focus on my weaker points and revise at any time , anywhere even if it was just for a quick minute as there was not setting up and the app just lead me straight into my own revision.
Are there any legal and ethical issues of the interactive product? There could potentially be issues if the abc don't have the rights to the images the images they present on the website/ app. However, the BBC has a fairly good legal track record and I don't believe there are any legal implications to the Bitesize app.
The second Product I have chosen is the Facebook messenger app
Facebook messenger is a social media and messaging app
In detail what the actual purpose of the product is The official slogan of the Facebook website is"To make the world more open and connected." The statement was created by Mark Zuckerberg who created Facebook. Facebook is a way to connect with family and friends through media allowing you to message and update them either privately or openly for everyone else to see. It enables a user to create and join a community with similar interests or just to stay in contact with old communities or groups they were in . Meaning that more people are connected and aware of others and what they are doing. The messenger app is extension of this that only allows private messaging between people, no public updates or posts on your official public account or Facebook wall.
The other platforms this interactive product is available on and which is your preference Messenger is downloadable on mobile, tablet, iPod, laptop and is also a feature on the official Facebook site. My favourite way to use it is through my iPod as it is quick and easy to use and sends me notifications (like texts do ) when people have messaged me, which makes it very convenient and easy to use.
The design components and layout and your experience of it: The design of Facebook Messenger is very easy to read and understand. For example, when you open the app there is a list of your contacts and if you click on one it is a link to your private conversation with that person and enables you to start talking to them. Also there are tabs that tell you who you talked to most recently and who else is available and online to chat , which makes it easy to navigate to who you want to talk to or can talk. Also there is a search bar , which means if you wish to message someone who you don't normally talk to. On the tabs to click on to access conversation it displays the persons profile name and picture , so you can tell who you are talking to. The primary colours of messenger are blue and white. And this is good because personally I find that they work well together and aren't distracting and easy to follow.
The interactive features of the product - what are they and what’s your experience of them like? The interactive features include signing in. Which is useful because it means you can switch accounts and if someone needs to access and message people they can use your device if you allow them. Also, a feature is that it allows you to pst a story, which means you can send temporary update on what you have done with your day but they disappear within 24 hrs. Also it allows you to create group chats with more then two people in a conversation. I find the sign in feature useful because there have been times where my i pod ran out of charge and i needed to message someone quickly and the sign in feature meant i could use a friends phone and then return it. Also, I like the group chat element as I use it to connect with people in my school classes and if I miss work it can be sent over the chat.
The benefits of this interactive product are:
Allows the user to make free calls, messages and video calls to anywhere in the world as long as they have internet access. Which is useful because it means that you can have longer conversations without spending money for overseas conversations like you have to do with normal phone calls.
It is simple to navigate the app. There are are different tabs all at the top of the scene (messages, active, groups and calls) which easily allows you to see who you contacted last, who you want to message, who is online and is able to reply and your caller history.
The app sends you phone message notifications (if you chose it to) which means it is as convenient as text as you automatically can know if you have been messaged and also if more convenient then just the Facebook app as it doesn't notify you on all the activity on your feed, just the private messages.
The limitations of the interactive product
One limitation of this product is that you can't easily access the main Facebook website without opening another app, like safari. Which means you can't access some of the main features of Facebook and news feeds and you cant tag people in images or video.
Another limitation about this product is the fact that you can't see multiple conversations at the same time, like of Facebook. So if you are having multiple conversations at once , you have to switch conversation pages which can be confusing and lead to you sending a message to the wrong person.
The effectiveness of the interactive product In my opinion I feel that this product is effectives I use it a few times everyday . I use it because it is instant and allows me to talk to my friends and family easily , even if they are in a foreign country and unlike texting it doesn't cost . I find the app very useful as it is available to use on the go and is only takes a few seconds to check . Are there any legal and ethical issues of the interactive product? One legal issue that can occur with the Facebook app is Privacy, if you don't log out your account straight away after using the app anyone can access your account and details. Another issue is cyber bullying and bullying, as often group chats can be used to slander an individual or exclude them or pick on them and it is easy to create a chat and control who is allowed on them.
Third media product is the Gumtree app
(marketing, promotional, advertisement )
Gumtree is the first site for free classifieds ads in the UK. Buy and sell items, cars, properties, and find or offer jobs in your area. It is an online auction and add placement site . It allows you to buy and sell your goods
The other platforms this interactive product is available on and which is your preference
Gumtree is available on app, which means it is accessible for phone , tablet, iPod and iPad. It started off as website so is also available to devices with good internet, such as laptops and desktops. Personally i prefer the website as I think it is a simpler layout and allows you to see a bigger variety of products at once.
e design components and layout and your experience of it. Gumtree is fairly easy to read and navigate because it is layed out by category, so once signed it you can decide straight away what type of product you want to shop for. There is also a search engine on the top of all the pages, so users can search what they want to buy. From my personal experience I find this very useful as to allows me to find a specific product instantly, without having to scroll. There is also another tab for users to sell their products and unwanted items. The colours are mainly green and orange and white. Which i think makes it look bold and easy to follow. However, I think they are quite young and childlike colours , and give s the website that feel- which i think makes it feel patronising
The interactive features of the product - what are they and what’s your experience of them like On the home page of the app there is a sign up tab, where a user has to sign in/register in order to purchase or sell a product. This is a good thing as it means I can, as a user, monster what I buy and how much i spend. Also there is a search engine, meaning that it is quick and easy for me to find a specific product and be able to look at it and buy it.. Another interactive feature is the search options, where I can can search for what i want in a product, e.g. price, color , first or second hand and this Means i can find the product I want at the price and quality I want.
The benefits of the interactive product
You clearly see a list of your options of the product you are looking for. Each product has an image and small description when scrolling down the list of products you are looking for and then you can access more information by clicking of the image. This is useful because it allows view the product quickly and quickly scroll through what you don't want.
Another benefit is that it is easy to work within a price range and find what you are looking for without going over budget. As there are search bars and price checks and all the prices are visible next to the product, so you know exactly what you are paying and can limit your search so it is not possible to go over budget
It is very easy to register and navigate for example the sign in feature is very simple and is the one of first things you encounter when downloading the app, so you don't have to fuss about how signing inn works or how to begin personalising you experience of Gumtree.
The limitations of the interactive product
One limitations is that, because there is no bulk stock so people may miss out on the opportunity to buy something they need because there is only one advertised on the site and people may miss out on a product that they really need that is not being sold on other providers such as amazon.
Another limitation is that because anyone can sell anything it means that that a product may not be as good as it is presented and allows people to get ripped of. For example, a car could be being advertised at a really good price but the sellers didn't say all the services it requires in the description.
The effectiveness of the interactive product I feel that Gumtree is very effective as I do use it a lot. It allows me to be able to buy any item, for a good price nd wishin the uk, so it often doesn't cost to ship or post. Also, the app is convenient as i can use it anywhere at any time.
Are there any legal and ethical issues of the interactive product? One legal issue that can occur on Ebay is intellectual property. This is because a person may advertise to sell a product that belongs to a company and the person selling the product doesn't have the rights to that product without the companies permission or they don't have permission to use the companies name . Another issue is privacy, because users have to sign up to sell or buy something you need to give your personal information and card details to make a purchase. Gumtree has to make sure that they do not release any information about the user without their permission and monitor if they get hacked and make sure hackers are shut down
Compare and contrast the use of different platforms and formats for delivering different interactive media products
Snapchat
Snap Chat is a social media product. It is available on both IOS ( iPhone,iPod, iPad) and it is also available on android smartphones, however, it is not available on kindle or laptop/desktop. Snapchat was mainly created for people to make and multimedia messages, known commonly as “ snaps”,to each other Snaps mainly consist of a photo or a short video, and can be quickly edited to include filters and effects, text captions, and drawings. There is also a private messaging feature which allows the user to hold private video calls, calls or message conversations with there corespondent without snapping a photo or video. There is also a story function which allows the user to post snaps on a public time line that deletes after a day, so that all the users friends can see what they have been up to on any given day.
The design components and layout:
One both android and IOS the logo is the same, a white ghost on a yellow back ground. The icon is in both cases always kept in the top left hand corner and is a butt that if pressed is a link to your username and code. Both layouts on android and IOS have main pages. The first when you open the app is the camera screen, where you create snaps, this is a full screen live feed of your camera out put and in the top hand corner there are different tool and functions such as camera flash on and off button and camera flip button that change to drawing filter and sticker filter buttons when you take a photo/video. The second is a straight forward menu that lists people that have recently snapped you and this i where you can open their snaps and conversations. This is layed out simply by peoples usernames being laid out one under the other in terms of recency of last snap. The 3rd page is a simple screen that utalises a dark background and then had your snap chat ID code in bright yellow (On the snapchat ghost logo) it also underneath this provides links (written in a white font) that allow you to see your contacts , another which allows you search for contacts and see if anyone has added/requested for you to be their friend on snapchat. The next page is primary in the colours purple and white for IOS and blue and white for android. However both a presented the same and list peoples stories in order of last updated, that when clicked provide a link to a story.
Whilst both android and IOS follow this basic design and layout there are a few differences because the software they are being presented on is different. For example
The pictute on the left is android and the send to page has a purple and white color scheme , where as on IOS it is blue and white. Also on the android the list of messages the icons are different although the colors scheme are the same and that is similar to the difference in emojis between android and IOS as the different software has its own brand of emoji
(IOS on the left , Android on right )
The interactive features of the product
Both IOS and android offer the same interactive features on snap chat. For example, to start the app they both have a sign up or sign in page. Also both offer the same video and photo editing software and allow you to use facial recognition for live filters or allow you to apply colour filters, stickers, drawing or text after you take and image and allow you to chose this by clicking on different icons such as a paint brush and using your finger to draw on the screen or by swiping on the picture on the screen to try different filters such as colour filters before sending. Also both allow the function of private messaging and the ability to post a story in the same way.
Possitives to android and IOS
They both function and are used in the same way
They both offer the same filters and functions, so both apps are effectively the same
They both keep the same basic layout design which is easy to navigate
limitations to IOS and android
Snap chat uses live video feed of camera. So there is limited to display resolution. This can be a problem for android quality as even though the camera may be good quality the iphone tends to be more refined providing better resolution
The emojis are different, so when sending one emoji from android to IOS, they may come up differently and mean something different to how the emoji was meant to be perceived.
The effectiveness of the interactive product
I believe that both apps are very effective. However, my personal preference is to use snap chat on IOS devices as I prefer the IOS emojis and icons. I also find that the colour scheme is nicer for me personally and makes the app easier to navigate. I also find the IOS screen that I have more sensitive then the android device I own, which is useful because when I wish to use the brush tool it is easier to control and use.
BBC News
BBC News is a journalism media product available on online (lap to/ desktop) , app (IOS and android). BBC News is a product that provides and covers current news articles and stories both on going and breaking news.
The design components and layout.
Across all platforms the BBC News product tends to keeps a similar design, for example, the colour scheme red, white and black is carried across all platforms and I believe this is good because it makes the product recognisable and also the colours compliment each other well without being distracting from the news articles. All utalise a lot of pictures to make the page look interesting and sell the story to the audience. Both have category tabs, such as sport, weather , global my story . However, the website lays these out at the top of the page in one long line that is easy to see and navigate and the app also lays these out at the top of the screen, however, because of the limited screen width you have to scroll through them, which is a little harder to navigate and doesn't look as neat as the website.
The interactive features of the product
Both allow you to click on links to different articles and scroll through news stories and provide different tabs for different to click on and read through. Also, both have an interactive sign in feature, which means people can create their own personalised feed from thousands of topics so they can ge the news that matters to you, without having to scroll through articles they aren't invested in.Something the app does that the website can't is send news alerts including support for smart watches, so you can keep up to date with the topics you are interested in all the time. On all platforms there is an interactive search bar, so you can search for specific stories to read.
Positives of the platforms
They all provide up to date breaking news and live news feeds. This is good because it means that all platforms are providing the users with the same news and all the news is current.
There is a search bar feature making it easy for people to find exactly what they want. For example, you could type in a place , name or event and the most relevant news stories will come up instead of having to scroll through all the different news stories to find the one you wish to read.
You can get alerted on breaking news (app) This in tern means you can get alerted by the app (through vibration, sound and/or a banner) on the most current important and up to date news. This is convenient because it means you don't have to constantly be refreshing the internet website page to receive new news straight away.
limitations to the platforms
The app doesn't cover as many stories as the the website , so coverage across the platforms can be inconsistent. This means, although all the headlines will be covered, if you are looking to access a specific news story that isn't priority it may not show up on the app.
You don't get website alerts, unlike the app, so if you don't have a device where you require and app you won't get the alerts. This means that those who don't have the app or a device with the app ay miss out on finding out about important current information.
The effectiveness of the interactive product
I think all the products are effective in that they are kept up to date with current and breaking news. However, I believe that the app is more effective in terms of interactivity with the reader as they can use it on the go and easily and also receive alerts personalised account with the app. However, in terms of navigation and content I believe the website is more effective as it is simpler to navigate and covers a wider range of stories, so is more effective in the range of content.
Netflix
Netflix if a monthly subscription based online on demand and movie rental service. That allows you watch and download films and tv on the go. It is an entertainment media product. It is available on game consols, TV boxes, Internet, tablets and smartphones (android and IOS) and on blue ray players.
The design components and layout.
The main color scheme of netflix is Red, Black and white, this is the same across all platforms. On most platforms there are list of suggest movies for you to watch, these are shown in icons of the movies and then when you click on an icon you are takes to a page
That has a small description of the show underneath its title and adjacent is an image of an episode with a play button. Underneath there are tabs with information about the show ( overview, episodes, trailers and more, more like this and details) This is mostly the same across all platforms, however on smaller devices there is less screen space, so less options are displayed at once and it appears a little more cramped.
The interactive features of the product
Netflix has the same features across all platforms. The first interactive feature is the sign in page, as netflix allows people to have multiple accounts for the same subscription and this means you can personalise what you watch and you lists on netflix depending on who you are and what account you use. As well as just online streaming another interactive feature is the download feature on Netflix, which is a button displayed on the side of an episode tab that allows you to download the episode, so you can have the option of watching it without using internet for a couple of days, his is particularly useful for the app on smart phone or tablet as you can then watch quickly, on the go. Another interactive feature is the search bar on all platforms that allows you search specifically for what film or show you want. Also netflix across all platforms allows you to make lists of what shows you watch, so you can be alerted when new episodes are released .
The benefits of the interactive product
You can download and watch films and tv on the go, without internet by downloading them and this means that you can watch them over and over again.
You can personalise your accounts and chose what you watch and when. It is is at you leisure , you don't have to watch something as soon as it comes out and you have a choice of what to watch. You can make lists of shows and movies you wish to watch and this means that you click on the my list button and they are already there for you and you don't have to search for them. Also this means you are notified when a new episode or season of a show comes out.
You can watch episodes from all seasons of a show, which allows you to start watching a current show that has already started from the beginning. This is good because a lot of the time station websites only allow you to watch the most recent seasons.
The layout and format is very similar across all platforms so it is very easy to use. This is good because it means that the user doesn't have to struggle or relearn how to use Netflix on the different platforms and can just connect their account up to different platforms and continue using Netflix from where they left off on their last platform.
The limitations of the interactive product
You can only download a limited amount of content before you run out space. This may be inconvenient because if you are going a long time without access you may run out of space before you have enough content downloaded to fill the time . For example, if you have a long car journey or plane journey you may not be able to fill up the time of your journey.
Only one person can use Netflix at one given time without paying more on your monthly subscription. This is inconvenient because it can become very expensive as not everyone can afford to pay a subscription to Netflix each month.
Some shows and films aren't on Netflix and you can't watch them on it. Different TV and film companies chose which companies that their product is displayed/affiliated with and some companies don't chose to let their content to be displayed on Netflix.
The effectiveness of the interactive product
I think the app is very effective. Personally I use both the app on IOS and the website on laptop and I like how the
