The brief I have even given is to produce a short news segment on the topic of cyberbullying for the news program Newsround, which is played on the CBBC channel. The core audience that CBBC targets is for children aged 6-12, which means that my article is targeted for this age and means that I have to be aware of the limitations and implications of this whilst creating an article targeted at and consumed by this age group. Taking this into account I have decided not to include specific and detailed accounts and stories of cyberbullying as they may be too dark and deemed inappropriate for a younger audience and end up scaring rather then informing the audience. Typically nowadays children start to properly use social media and things on the internet such as chat rooms at Teenage ages, partly due to age restrictions (e.g Facebook has an age restriction of 13+) and peer pressure in secondary school. So in my article I aim to explain and warn the audience about the effects of cyberbullying, so that are aware and ready of it when they come across social media and possibly cyberbullying in the future. I also am going to emphasise the importance of communicating about cyberbullying and where to go to for support if you or a friend is being cyber bullied. Also, I am going to have a VT package in my news segment to keep the audience engaged in the piece as it will add more visual variety to the piece and because younger children generally have a quite low attention span and a visual VT will keep their focus on the piece where as just a presenter talking may cause them to lose focus.
News Values
I explain through News Values in the Prezzi in slides 1 and 2. Then I explain and highlight their relevance in a BBC news article about Sooty from slides 3-14.
Gutang and Ruges Nine News values in relation to the story I intend to tell
Recency- My story fits the recency news value because cyberbullying is a very modern and current problem that is occurring. As the children in the target audience are about to come into the age bracket that ar e more commonly affected and involved in cyberbullying it is imperative that they know and have a knowledge and understanding of cyberbullying and the effects it has and also what to do in cases of cyberbullying, So my article will be exceptionally useful and relevant for the age group I am targeting.
Superlatives- I will use these because the article needs to understood by and appeal to people of a younger generation. This would mean using colloquial, slang and informal language in order to gain a friendly and engaging tone for my audience.
Unambiguity - The main concerns of my article in terms of ambiguity would be the worry of using too complex language and sentences in the piece that would cause the audience to misinterpret or not understand the information. So to avoid this I will make sure to replace any of the more complex vocabulary choices with simpler ones. Such as Using words like big instead of gargantuan or words instead vocabulary.
Relevance and Proximity- The audience watching are at risk themselves or will be in the future at risk of cyberbullying or may even have friends or family being cyber bullied, so this topic is very relevant and could be or become a very close problem for them as it will most likely end up effecting them in some way.
Consonance- This type of story and report will be being covered a lot as cyberbullying is fairly recent and ongoing problem and it is constantly changing , developing and growing at an alarming rte with the advances in technology and increase in people using it . Also because, it can effect anyone so any news providers target audience could be effected by it.
Unexpectedness- I Know Newsround has covered cyberbullying stories before so in terms of topic it may not be entirely unexpected. However, I believe in terms of content I believe my content will be fairly unexpected as I have chosen to include and will an interview from a professional care worker rather then a victim of cyberbullying, which I know has been done before on Newsround, also I will give slightly different but equally valid advice of what to do for help, such as talking to friends and giving the website of a help and information source which is slightly less well known but useful for children, parents and teachers. Also I will advise children to reach out to others and emphasise the effect they can have on someone else's life and make them feel like that thy can actually help rather then just be bystander or not very much use. Reference to Elites- I don't intend to make much reference to the elites in my article as I don't have permission to use their stories in my article. However, I may provide links to where their stories can be found and mention them in the article. As This is a piece about cyber bullying it would be a bad practise and example to the viewers to use anybodies story famous or not that has been made public without their expressed permission.
Personalisation- I will personalise my article by making sure that it is relevant to the target audience. I will do this by making sure I use friendly and colloquial language to engage with the audience and I will use language and references that are understood by the target audience. I will also use a young presenter in their mid/late teens to make the presenting more relatable and the story more relevant to the audience.
Negativity- The topic I am reporting on is a negative one. However, the impact and message I intended to give to the audience is one of support and emphasizing how to help and get help. This means by focusing more on this side I can avoid depressing or upsetting the audience and means that instead of focusing on the negative side of the article they will focus more on the message of support and help, which is a more positive message.
Discuss how you will present this information
I will present my story as a short video news segment in the CBBC channel Newsrounds' style. Which means it will be presented in a relaxed but still formal setting. With the news presenter standing is a relaxed manner dressed in casual but smart fashion. Also, It will be presented with a VT section in the middle of the story to break up the information and keep the viewer interested. The presenter although presenting a serious story will have a friendly and quite casual sense in their presenting in order to keep the tone light eneough not to have a negative impact on the audience but they wont be smiling or laughing in order to convey the seriousness of the topic in hand.
On paper my Story will be presented in short, easy to read and understandable sentences in order to be fluently read of a prompter. Also the information will be presented in short sections on each prompter slide , which means each section needs to be concise and to the point in order for it to inform the audience of the effects of cyberbullying without their being any waffle to keep it within the time limits and keep the audience engaged.
An example of the style I want to emmulate is the brief section in this video called UNREST IN UKRAINE starting at 00:18 and ending at 1:00.
Moral Panic
I discuss Moral panic from slide 15- 16 and then talk through a news article that uses moral panic and identify and explain in detail the moral panic techniques used in the article from 17-24.
Can My News Story cause Moral Panic ?
Yes , My Story could create moral panic if interpreted wrong . For example, if people chose to focus less on the message of help and more on the statistics that Cyberbullying is common and if they focus on the negative effect on people and deem the internet just a scary and dangerous place. In addition, to the kids feeling this parents may also watch this and forbid their children from using the internet, which can have a detrimental effect both socially and education wise for the child during the technological age we live in. It may also lead to parents blaming different problems society or their children have on the internet.
How can My News story cause moral panic through Hyperbole?
My news article highlights one of the dangers of the internet and focusses on this. Which means if explained poorly or not in enough people could just assume or interoperate social media and the internet to be just a dangerous place, when it can be used for good as well. Also People may only focus on the negatives and through hear say elements of my article may get exaggerated leading to false accusations and statements that will cause moral panic.
How can My News story cause moral panic through emotive language?
I will be careful not to use overly emotional language in my news story. However, I will be using a section of a voiceover interview I will conduct and I don't have any control over what the person I am going to interview will say and if they say something too emotive it may cause the wrong reaction from the audience, such as fear or anger, and cause and spread moral panic and misunderstanding.
How can My News story cause moral panic through Superlatives?
If I exaggerate certain features of my news article it can have a negative impact. For example if I exaggerate the negative effect cyber bullying can have it will cause moral panic and fear rather then getting my point across.
How can My News story cause moral panic through Imagery?
If I include graphic or motive images of cyberbullying messages, victims or the effects of bullying it may cause shock and fear and in some cases nightmares especially in the younger viewers. This will cause moral panic as it may cause people to fear the internet and the impact of the images will detract away from the message of the article and spread a message of fear rather of help and hope.
Primary and secondary research
My primary and secondary information and sources can all be found from slides 25-35
Evaluating my Sources
The Evaluation of my sources can be found from slides 36-40. And I assess the relevancy of my sources on slide 41
Newsround Audit
Reliability
Why did you choose these people to interview? I chose to interview these people to interview because they have a lot of knowledge on the subject and I believe a professional opinion is useful because it’s not always heard ad much as it should be and is level headed perspective and comes from a place of sympathy and knowledge.
Do you think their contribution was important? I think it is important because it continues the serious and factual tone but also adds an element of emotion and uses more emotional language
Where they the right people to interview? I feel that they were the right people to interview because they have a powerful opinion on cyberbullying. however, I think if i was to it again I would, in addition to this interview, have an interview with a victim of cyberbullying to enforce the reality of cyberbullying .
Relevance of your story to its target audience and broadcaster I feel that my story is relevant to my target audience because it is a prominent problem happening to this generation and it provides them with a means to get help and helps kids to realise that even if they aren't directly involved that they can still help, making it relevant to all the target audience not just those who are being bullied.
Accuracy of your story
How do can you vouch that your story is 100% accurate? I feel that my news story is 100% accurate because I have sourced all my information from reliable websites. However, I am aware that some of the information may not be completely current as statistics can change daily.
Validity
Are the stories findings valid and factually sound? Yes, They are Valid as the link i provide is a genuine link and also the advise on not being a bystander is valid advise, given on many websites and is perpetuated by many people in the media.
Accessibility
How will you write your story so that your target audience will understand it and at the same time be challenged by it? I wrote my story to the intellectual level of the audience (simple sentences, not too ambitious vocabulary) however, it will challenge them in a more social way as it encourages them to take more notice and care of those around them. Which is something that I think people sometimes neglect to do or it slips their mind to do and something that can be a challenge for adults, so will most likely be one for kids and the actual challenge comes from understanding the message of the video.
Quality
Do you think your sources are good quality? How do you know this?
I feel that my sources are fairly good quality, because they are professional sources (both websites and people) which means it is their job to give sound advise and help people in these situations- which means their advise or words must both be realistic and achievable and true. I also feel like they fit the quality of standard I am looking for as they are clear and straightforward. However, I am not overly happy with the sound quality of the interview I took and if I was to do it again would use professional equipment to get a better and clearer quality.
Cost effectiveness
If the story was written for a newspaper would it help sell papers? If so how?
I believe the ideas and theme behind the article would sell. However, i do not believe in the format it is currently written i don’t believe it would sell as newspapers are more formal and generally have a different older target audience, who may find the way my story is written patronising and since it is written in a very direct way might find it a bit too oppressive and commanding. I think that the fact it is such a major and current issue, would help to sell it in papers but overall I wouldn’t deem the content correct for selling in papers , even though the topic has the potential to.
